Friday, the 22nd of August, was a very busy day for the #AskOutlander hashtag. The talented and lovely red-haired (hm, we just had another hot red-head on here last week) Lotte Verbeek, who portrays Geillis Duncan in the new Outlander series, took to the twitter airwaves at the same time as Graham McTavish and also answered questions posted by fans around the world. If you were following #AskOutlanderGraham and missed out on Ms. Verbeek’s tweets, you will find them all below. Peruse at your leisurely pleasure.
Perhaps the most popular enquires made were in regard to the difference in Geillis Duncan’s on-screen time versus her role in the novel by Diana Gabaldon. Fans are eager to see if she will have a larger part in the story. Much happens between Geillis and a certain Handsome Highlander off the pages. Will we see titillating hints or steamy glimpses of their relationship through Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) eyes in the show? Of course, Ms. Verbeek is coy about answering – as coy as Geillis herself.
All the characters in the Outlander novels are intriguing in different ways, but we know what’s especially special about Geillis, don’t we? We also know how organic Diana Gabaldon’s writing is which brings me to a related question: Did she know Geillis Duncan was a you-know-what when she first introduced the character? Geillis is certainly a multi-layered onion, but did she start out as a mushroom then sprout into an onion?
Mysterious is another descriptive often associated with her character, along with insane and nuts. She doesn’t seem “nuts” in the first novel – maybe a little over-dedicated to her cause. Let’s not talk about her actions in Voyager. Boy, am I dying to see that novel come to life – it being my favorite of the series.
It’s easy to recognize bits of Geillis in Ms. Verbeek, and she seems to have quite a fun time playing the mischievous character. They have a few things in common – hair-twirling being one, and they both have a fantastic sense of style. Outlander Costume Designer, Terry Dresbach, has a dedicated post on Geillis’ “Moth Dress” and some early sketches of her other looks.
