SILENT NIGHT

We’re five days away from Christmas, and I want to share with you one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time. It’s a 2002 Hallmark Production entitled SILENT NIGHT, starring Linda Hamilton.

The movie is based on a true story, set on Christmas Eve in 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. Hamilton plays a German woman, Elisabeth, who travels with her young son Fritz to their family’s small hunting cabin near Bastogne.

When American soldiers show up at Elisabeth and Fritz’s door, the family has no choice but to them inside. The situation becomes dangerously complicated when a small squad of Germans come upon the cabin later that same afternoon during the beginnings of a snowstorm. What follows is a Christmas Eve Young Fritz will never forget.

I own the DVD of SILENT NIGHT where the movie opens with a voiceover narration by Fritz as an older man. The entire story takes place in 1944. However, I found a version on youtube which includes a modern-day scene of an aged Fritz meeting the son of the one of the soldiers. He tells this young man the story of that Christmas Eve in 1944.

Personally, I could do without this addition to the story. It makes the movie feel more “televisiony.” But, as it’s the only version online, it’ll have to do for those of you who want to watch it for free. Even with the corny beginning and end, I highly recommend it.

  1. I just watched that movie a couple weeks ago. I love that movie. Linda Hamilton is great too. But, yes, the fact that it was based on a true story made it more interesting. Wonderful movie.
