The first official Outlander Season 3 trailer premiered on Sunday and because you haven’t all been hiding out in Jamie’s dunbonnet cave, I know you’ve watched it over and over . . . and over . . . and then a few more times. You’ve freeze-framed and feasted your eyes on every image. Analyzed the whole kilt and caboodle. But just in case you haven’t had your head stuck in the sand, here it is again:

It’s a trailer editor’s job to make us think we know what’s going on when really we have no clue. One particular image I found especially interesting because it’s not adapted from the novel is the image of Dr. Claire Randall with her hospital colleagues. My first thought is they’re watching something on television. Could it be 1963? Of course, Claire doesn’t look distressed enough to be watching the news reporting on the assassination of JFK though Joe looks fairly distraught. There’s lots happening in the 1960s from the war in Vietnam to civil rights protests, so who knows? Can’t wait to find out.

Another image I found extremely intriguing, as I’m sure you did as well, was the close up of Jamie appearing to be lying on his back. The previous wide shot of Culloden Moor leads us to believe that’s where he is. But maybe he’s in Ardsmuir or Lallybroch or in a opium den. Well, maybe not an opium den. For now, I think I’ll go with Culloden. Who will we find lying beside him? Will the show stay faithful to the book or throw us for a loop? September will tell.

Roger MacKenzie is notably absent from the trailer which means absolutely nothing, other than Outlander likes to keep us wanting more, more, more. This trailer is all about the happy Randalls and poor, lonely Jamie calling out for Claire in some mysterious tower of stone.

Though I only watched the trailer twice, several other questions sprang to mind, all of which I decided to present in my usual rhetorical fashion.

SPOILER ALERT. There are several ahead. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

  1. I really enjoy your posts. They are so creative. This trailer has brought all the angst back. It is so emotional for me and hits home on many levels. There is just something about this show. Can’t wait for S3.

  2. I still think that is Willie as Mac is saying good bye to him… We do not get the trailers from Starz in my part of Canada, so these clips are fascinating . I don’t mind spoilers as I have all 8 books and have read them 3 times over. ( or more).
love your poetry , and it fits every clip…. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Rose! I’m glad I was able to give you a peek at the trailer. Italian Outlanders often post on youtube with an international version, so you might want to check them out.

  3. Mebbe it’s Jenny’s baby? Didn’t Jamie end up in a closet (when he came out from hiding for a meal, etc.) holding the new-born because the red coats showed up? Looks too small to be an adult. Here’s hoping…

  4. Well done Candida very amusing!…. Loving the spoilers but when you’ve read all the books, the series is just time waiting to happen……. love it, keep on keeping on.

  5. AH-parently according to DG when questioned on her FB page, “hugging scene” isn’t with William or Marsali. That leaves but one. Leery….ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH. No wonder Jamie looks miserable. 😉
